We smash iron posts into cracked clay

building up before we look down

our actions cause regret for generations

We recite the words—paying respect to elders past and present—

begging for forgiveness

We say we forgive but we will never forget

Always remember the lies they told,

the promises that are never kept

I walk on the soil of the land that isn't mine

heavy with the debt I cannot return.

Moss chokes the trees through their raspy tired howls

the sea erodes the cliff,

the birds cry, the flowers no longer bloom.

The land is lost,

buried deep in the lies and forgotten words

that once made a whole world

I hear them plea every night the country begs for a key

I do not posses,

one girl cannot change a lifetime of mistakes

this late.
